H. GUY CHILD ELEMENTARY POLICY ON DIGITAL MEDIA DEVICES (DMD) INCLUDING CELL PHONES
H. Guy Child Elementary is committed to ensuring that a DMD does not interfere with instructional time, safety procedures, or infringe on the privacy of others. Bringing Digital Media Devices to school often shifts a student's focus from academics. When such items get lost or broken valuable learning time is wasted. Certain devices may also contribute to an unsafe school environment.
In order to ensure that a DMD does not interfere with our learning environment, the following procedures will apply to the use of a DMD on school property during school hours.
•DMDs including cell phones, music devices, gaming devices, etc. should not be used during school hours, unless approved/authorized by the Teacher or Principal for academic purposes. They are not to be seen, heard or used in any way. Student cell phones should not be used on school property from 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and be turned off in student's backpack.
•Misused electronic devices may be confiscated and will be available for parent or guardian pickup in the office.
•The first offense is a warning. The second and third offense may include but not be limited to loss of free time, behavior contract, in-school suspension, or out-of-school suspension.
•The office phone is available for students to contact parents in case of a school issue or emergency. Parents should call the school to get messages to their child. Exceptions can be made by the Principal on a case by case basis. Cell phones may be used in designated areas at designated times only.
•School personnel will not be held responsible for electronic devices that are lost, stolen or broken.
•School administration or designee may search digital media devices based on reasonable suspicion that they may contain evidence of a violation of school/district rules or policy.
•School district policies and State and Federal laws regarding illegal content of electronic devices will be enforced.
•Any exceptions to the above procedures must be approved by the principal.
